Urban Tree started in 2006 with a flatbed truck, a few tools, and Gabe Tschida doing the work himself. It is now a crew, a boom truck, and a fleet, and the part that has not changed is who answers for the diagnosis. Gabe is an ISA-Certified Arborist and he still looks at the trees. That is the whole reason this page exists: you are probably here because you found us and want to know whether we are real before you let us near your house.

How it started

Built in Maple Grove, One Truck at a Time

Gabe Tschida grew up in Little Falls and studied finance at the University of Minnesota. He did not stay in finance. In 2006 he started Urban Tree with a flatbed truck and a few tools, and spent the first years doing the climbing, the cutting, the raking and the invoicing himself.

Twenty years later the company runs a crew, a boom truck and crane-assisted removals across the Twin Cities metro, and Gabe is still the ISA-Certified Arborist who looks at your tree and puts his name on the answer. That is not nostalgia. It is the reason the diagnosis is honest: the person telling you whether a tree has to come down is the person who owns the consequences of being wrong.

The part that costs us money

We Will Tell You When You Do Not Need Us

Most tree companies will remove any tree you point at. We will not, and it is the most expensive decision we make. Before anyone quotes a removal, an ISA-Certified Arborist looks at the tree’s condition, its structure, what is underneath it and what is realistically going to happen over the next few years. Sometimes the answer is that it has to come down. Often it is a prune. More than once it has been “leave it alone and look at it again in a couple of years,” and we would rather say that and lose the job than take money for work you do not need.

There is a business reason as well as an honest one. Twenty-eight percent of our work comes from customers we have already served or from people they sent us. You do not get that by selling somebody a removal they did not need.

Urban Tree Mission

Our mission is simple enough to check: leave the property better than we found it, and tell the truth about what it needs. The first half of that is written down as a checklist, and the crew lead signs it before the truck leaves.

The five-star finish, the actual checklist

Every item on the work order compared against the finished job, and a final scan for anything missed
Lawn raked and blown clear of leaves, twigs and debris
Driveway, sidewalks, patio and deck blown or swept clean of sawdust
Roof and gutters blown clear of anything the job put there

Street and curb cleaned of mud, chips and debris
Equipment checked for fluid leaks on the driveway and street
Every mat, board and protective material removed from the site
A walk-through with you before we go, and anything you point at fixed on the spot

The last line on the sheet is a signature. If the yard is not right, the job is not finished, and the person who signed it is the person who has to come back.

Who does the work

Certified Arborists

Anybody can buy a chainsaw and a truck. An ISA-Certified Arborist has to pass an exam, keep the certification current, and answer for the diagnosis. That is the difference between someone who removes trees and someone who can tell you whether yours needs removing.

The crew

The people who show up are Urban Tree employees, not a subcontracted crew you have never met. They work to the same written standard on every job: property protected before anything moves, the right equipment for the site rather than the cheapest to mobilise, and the finish checklist signed before they leave. Several of them have been here for years, which in this industry is worth more than any certificate.

Ask for the certificate of insurance and we will send it before the work starts. If a company will not, that is your answer.
