Before You Call Anyone
Not every tree that looks alarming at nine on a Sunday night is an emergency, and a company that treats all of them as one is charging you for its own convenience. Here is the honest split.
If you are in the second column, you do not need after-hours rates and we will book you like anyone else. If you are in the first column, stop reading and call.
Do not touch a tree that is on or near a power line, ever. Not with a ladder, not with a pole saw, not to “just move it off the driveway.” Utility lines can energise a whole tree. Call 911 and Xcel Energy, then call us, and we will coordinate with the utility.
One Real Job
An oak had already failed into the backyard of a Plymouth property. It brought limbs down out of the maples and elms above it on the way, leaving hangers over the work area, and the rest of the trunk was still standing and still failing.
The yard was a slope with a wooded edge, which meant every piece of wood had to be carried or driven out rather than dropped and dragged. The homeowner also had seven dead ash around the backyard perimeter, emerald ash borer among the reasons, with the largest of them beside the driveway.

The mats reduce turf damage on a job with this much wood crossing a lawn. They do not eliminate it, and anyone who tells you otherwise has not moved seven ash trees across a slope.
The Two Questions Nobody Answers
Call 911 and your utility before you call any tree company, including us. Assume the line is live and assume the whole tree is energised. Do not put a ladder against it, do not run a saw near it, and keep people and pets well back.
Xcel Energy handles lines coming into a property in most of the metro. Who owns the line, and therefore who clears the tree off it, depends on where the break is relative to your meter. We deal with this regularly and can tell you who to call, but the utility moves first and we work behind them.
Photograph it before anything is moved, from several angles, including the damage and the tree itself. Your insurer will want that and so will we.
Most homeowner policies in Minnesota cover removing a tree once it has hit an insured structure, and often cover the structure repair. A tree that fell in your yard and hit nothing is frequently not covered, which surprises people every storm season. We are a tree company and not your adjuster, so call your carrier early and get a claim number.

Describe what happened and where it is. If you can send a photo, do, because it answers more in one image than five minutes on the phone.

Getting the hazard off the structure and the weight off the tree comes first. The full cleanup follows, sometimes the same visit, sometimes the next.
What Drives the Price
We publish standard removal pricing on /tree-removal/ because a planned job can be priced from size and access. An emergency cannot, and any company quoting one sight unseen is guessing or padding.
What actually moves the number:
A tree on the ground is a removal. A tree on a roof is a rigging job where every piece has to be lifted away rather than dropped.
A fence, a deck, a car, a gas meter or a neighbour's property all change the method.
That adds a utility, a schedule, and a coordination step nobody controls.
Whether a truck or a loader can reach it, and whether the lawn needs protecting on the way in.
Work at 2am on a Sunday costs more than the same work on Tuesday morning. That is the honest reason the triage block above exists.
For planned removals, the ranges are published: front yard $800 to $1,200, side yard $1,500 to $4,000, backyard by hand $7,000 to $8,000, backyard with a crane about $3,500. An emergency version of the same tree costs more than the planned version, and we will tell you the number before we start, in writing.

If it is on a structure, on a vehicle, touching a power line, blocking your only exit, or if the trunk has split or the ground at its base has lifted, yes, call now. If it dropped small branches and the trunk and main limbs are sound, it can almost always wait for a normal appointment. Send a photo and we will tell you which one you have.
Yes, and we would rather say so than surprise you. Work outside normal hours, in bad weather, or under a structure costs more than the same job scheduled on a Tuesday. That is also why we will tell you when your tree does not need after-hours work.

In Minnesota, where the tree stands generally decides whose responsibility it is, and where it fell generally decides whose insurance is involved. It gets complicated fast. Call us and we will tell you what we can see, and both households can talk to their carriers.
Yes. Getting the hazard off the structure comes first, then the wood and brush go, then the work area gets raked and cleaned. On a big storm the cleanup sometimes follows on a second visit, and we will tell you that up front.
When a tree is too big or too far back to bring down by hand, a crane is usually the cheaper option.
