Most tree companies that show up in Maple Grove drove here. We did not. Urban Tree has worked out of the same shop on 93rd Avenue North since 2006, and Gabe has been the ISA Certified Arborist on the truck that whole time.
That matters in a couple of ordinary, practical ways. Maple Grove jobs get the shortest drive and the first slot when the schedule is tight. After a storm we are already here. And the crew that shows up at your house is our crew, in our trucks, not a subcontractor with our name on a magnet.
It also means we are not going anywhere. The people who recommend us here are our neighbours, and we still get calls from the streets we worked on fifteen years ago. That is the whole business model.

Before You Plan a Removal
Maple Grove has had a tree preservation ordinance since 1994, longer than most of the metro. Its T Tree Preservation District regulates any tree eight inches in diameter at breast height or larger on single-family residential lots, with replacement requirements attached when one comes out.
Eight inches is not a big tree. It is a tree you can get both hands around. So the assumption that a tree in your own back yard is simply yours to take down is not reliably true here, and the T districts are not obvious from the street.
Whether your lot falls in a T district, and whether the tree clears the eight-inch threshold, is part of the estimate. It is not an extra.
The ordinance is about replacing what comes out, not about stopping you. Since a 2021 amendment the requirement is calculated per tree rather than per inch.
Maple Grove requires a tree removal and treatment licence, renewed annually by February 1, with a licence sticker on the vehicle door. Look for it on any truck in your driveway.
Companies applying chemicals in Maple Grove must employ or contract someone with ISA arborist certification or an equivalent forestry degree, plus state pesticide certification.
Maple Grove took a different route to its ash problem than Minneapolis and St. Paul did. Rather than removing the public ash outright, the city council approved a twenty-year plan starting in 2021 to treat the ash in the public right-of-way, working section by section, with injections repeated on a two-year cycle.
In the first year roughly 2,000 right-of-way ash were treated and only about 125 to 150 were removed. That is a city choosing to keep its canopy rather than start over, and it is the right call where the trees are still healthy.
What the city is not doing is your ash. A tree on private property is the owner’s responsibility here as everywhere else, and the same two-year treatment cycle applies. An ash you treat once and forget is an ash you will pay to remove later.
Newer Maple Grove developments carry young boulevard trees that need structural pruning early, which is far cheaper than corrective work on a twenty-year-old tree.

The city’s emerald ash borer programme covers ash in the public right-of-way, roughly the first 10 to 15 feet of the property, and treats or removes those at city cost. Ash on private property is the owner’s responsibility. For anything beyond ash it is worth a quick call to the city, and we will tell you when that is the right call to make.

It depends on how far along it is, and a certified arborist should look before anyone quotes either one. A healthy ash with limited canopy loss can be worth treating, on a repeating two-year cycle, which is the same cycle the city uses on its own right-of-way ash. An ash well down the line is money spent twice. We will tell you which one you have.
